Well, if you subscribe to both the forum and the topic, you will receive the notification twice – because you have actually subscribed twice. PhpBB is just following your commands :)
Cancel the topic subscription and you will only receive one notification.
Oh crap. I just thought it would do some duplicate resolution at least... It's only because I set my default profile to auto-notify on topic, so I guess that's where it goes wrong then... but I always forget to subscribe to my own questions, so i'll see what to do about it... hmmm...
