Themes page hangs on save

Hi this is my first post and first time using Contao, I have installed and updated to 3.5.24 without the demo. Followed a tutorial on contaowiki to create my first site but when I am on the Theme settings and choose the Template folder the settings do not save, the page just hangs with an overlay saying 'Loading'. the only way I can stop this is by refreshing the page.
I have read a post with a similar issue but as I have automatically installed Contao through my webhost I'm unsure where I can check or change anything to solve the problem.
I have already uninstalled and re-installed.
Any help would be appreciated.

You should Update to Contao 3.5.28 and check your server environment with the Contao Check.

Hi thanks for the input, I have done as suggested and still have the same issue?

So the Contao Check did not show any issues?

The error you describe usually happens, if you don't have at least PHP 5.4
