I created the google analytics template, then edited the tracking ID and get this message. See photo.

I also ticked google analytics in the script settings in the front and regular page layout. And copied script from google there.

/contao/main.php refers normally to the back-end. I don't think so that you want refer to the BE for google?!

404 is generated because /contao/main.php just woks when you logged in in the BE. If your not logged it it generates a url like this "contao/?referer=Y29udGFvL21haW4ucGhw".
