I am not sure what to do here. I unzipped the update file, put it in public_html but when I go to /contao/install.php I get a blank screen. The last time this installation was updated was 2011.

The /install.php is broken in Contao 4.3.9. You do not need the /install.php anymore though, you can use the /contao/install route directly.
