We ruled out the option of updating our existing website because the Contao CMS does not provide us with the ability to innovate with current market trends. There are limited options for extending the capabilities of our website as the Contao system does not have the broad-based support and openly available resources that a more modern CMS offers.
Building a static website was not considered a viable option due to the fact that we have so many contributors and so much dynamic content. We determined that this option would be too expensive to build and too inflexible to deliver new content and functionality in a timely fashion.
We decided that our best option was to build the new website with a different CMS. The industry-leading Content Management Systems that are being considered include Drupal and WordPress. Both are open-source and widely used.
WordPress
WordPress is the chosen CMS for the following reasons
- Key Marketing and Technical personnel have significant experience developing and implementing websites utilizing WordPress
- Our time to market for the new website would be reduced because our main focus would be on integration and content optimization rather than the development of core functionality
- Our costs would be significantly lower as we will be able to perform the majority of the work utilizing in-house staff instead of relying on expensive developers to build core functionality
- Additional features and capabilities can be easily added utilizing drop-in plugins that are available through WordPress’ extensive community
- Ability to update our website’s look and feel using “themes” is much more flexible and can be done without effecting the underlying website content and structure
Benefits over Contao and Drupal
- Additional Functionality - Ability to utilize plugins from the vast WordPress community to add functionality.
- Flexibility – Ability to change the look & feel of the website easily to provide a fresh web presence.
- Simplicity – The interface is intuitive and takes little training to learn how things work.
- Mobility – Interfaces are all accessible via the web, and the front-end is accessible by mobile devices.
- Compatibility – Cross browser/language compatible.
- Rankability – Uses modern standards which are favored by search engines. Also, is able to be optimized according to the ever-changing search algorithms.
- Supportability – Many active forums where users are willing to help. There is also a large pool of expert free-lancing developers/designers that will work affordably.
