Solved - well kind of.

What I did is:
- installed vsftp on my machine to allow ftp. http://www.jonathanmoeller.com/screed/?p=3615
- then I did a CHMOD 999 on the directory where Contao is.

- have PC which is running Ubunutu 12.04
- I have apache 2.2.22 & PHP 5.3.10 installed

I just downloaded the latest file (from today) as a tar. I have untar-ed it into the var/www...
