Default turn off site for maintenance?

Is there a way to turn off a site for maintenance, maybe with a message? Ideally a logged in user would be able to see previews of pages when editing and the site is turned off.

I've looked on the old and new forum without luck ... seems like this would be a question that has been asked and answered, but I can't find it.

    thanks!

Yeah it would be great to see a maintenance extension, maybe with some sort of IP validation..

But for now I just have a unpublished page which i then moves up as the first page of the website and publishes when Im working

You could reset the permissions for a logged in user or group. You could then temporarily turn of things like "site structure" or "articles" from their navigation so they couldn't see any pages you didn't want them to. You could even get fancier and lock them out of entire sections with permissions on pages, etc. I hope this helps
