users, members, and data fields

I know the difference between users and members, that's not the issue.

I am running a site that has multiple contributors, though I will doing all their posting of articles. Their articles need to have their own byline that includes name AND business. When I post one of these articles I just change the author from me to someone else that I set up with a user account.

Problem: there is no extra field (as there is with members using the xmembers extension) for me to include the business of the member. And I haven't seen a similar extension that gives extra fields for users. AND I haven't found any way for users to author articles ...

any ideas? Thanks a bunch.
