Cannot connect to database

Hey,
newbie installing TL 2.8.3
When i ran the install script i'm fine up to the point where you specify the Database information.
After that I get the error message: Cannot connect to database.

I installed phpmyadmin and can connect to the database fine.

I at least checked 5 times my connection info but still get the error.
I checked the TL log files, mysql log files / syslog files but no info in regards to what might be wrong.
Any other ideas what to check?

What driver you use? MySQL or MySQLi ? For database based on MySQL 5 should be MySQLi.
