updating from rather old release to current

I have a typolight installation that is not up to date, and seeing the current version numbers there are a few versions between mine and the current one ( it's a 2.7.* ).

I've seen that to upgrade I should backup some files and overwrite everything else. Can this be done disregarding which version I come from? Or does it work only if your installation is just one release back?
