No image thumbnails after Contao upgrade

After manually upgrading from Typolight (and a pretty old version too) to Contao, all images in my text paragraphs have disappeared. Instead of the previously generated thumbnails in the system/html folder, Contao now uses different file name codes, with a no image found logo as a result. The link to the original image just works.

How do I get these thumbnails back without re-uploading all the images and re-inserting them in the messages?

I have hundreds of these stories...

I would start by going into Maintenance and purging data for system/html. If that doesn't resolve it, go to Settings > Security settings > Display error messages. Then, go to file manager and open a folder with many images. Post any error messages here.

Thanks, changing permissions on that directory and purging did the trick!
