Default location for custom E-mail templates

When making a newsletter there is the option to select an E-mail template. The default template is stored in the /system/modules/core/templates/mail folder. When I add a custom template to this folder it is not visible in the newsletter selection menu. Where should I store custom E-mail templates?

Just add a new template copy via the back end module "Templates":

• back end module "Layout" > "Templates"
• "New template"
• "Original template" > "mail_default.html5" > "Create template" (the template copy is being saved in the "/templates" folder)
• Edit the template copy and add your modifications
• When renaming the template copy keep the prefix "mail_"
