Need some help with installing

this is probarly really simple, but i am a complete novice and not sure what i can do.

So i've installed xampp, activated apache & mysql
Download contao, put it in the xampp folder.
Made a database in phpmyadmin
Browsed to the install.php


Got to the part about the database connection.
Filled in the data - which i thought to be OK, but i got an time-out error
And now everytime i browse to the install file, nothing happens. After a few minutes i get an generic error 500 page

Please advise on what to check. Thanks very much in advance

Maybe you can check first wether Contao2Go will run on your system - https://contao2go.org/infos/contao2go-version-3.html. This is a bundle with all requirements.

I've downloaded that package, run the exe file server2go.exe which works
but i cant browse to the htdocs in the conta2go package.. Sorry for being so ignorant, but i really have no clue what to do....

Sorry I do not develop local, only on live servers. Maybe another one can help.
