How did you transfer the PHAR file to the webspace? If you did this via FTP, the file must be transferred in binary mode.

I have exactly the same problem.
Empty page, and web console shows the same error.
I tried everything, but no way.

    Well...

    - downloaded the contao-manager.phar in many ways : by browser, by wget, by curl. All look exactly the same
    - used it renaming to .phar.php, let as .phar, renamed to .php
    - tried all sort of permissions on website folders.
    - tried to move in and out of web folder
    - tried on another virtual host (which IS running contao). BTW, on that site the contao-manager.phar.php was running before the update to ubuntu 18.04, now it doesn't run either. The website still runs ok.
    - tried a self-update, which works and tells, correctly, that contao-manager is on latest version.
    - searched the whole server for some useful log, nothing found. Just that browser console's useless message.

I'm on it since some 24 hours, and I'm really out of ideas now.
It WAS working before updating to ubuntu 18.04 (from 16.04), now there's no way.

Okay, then maybe you should file an issue: https://github.com/contao/contao-manager/issues

Done... but I don't see any useful answer.
In the meantime, i tried with older versions, and I found that the version 1.0.0-beta19 is working, but none of the stable ones is.
I'll try to setup my site with the older contao-manager.
