Custom navigation with 'trail'?

I have a site with the main navigation created with the Custom Navigation module. This shows 3 main sections.
Is there any chance for the class 'trail' to be added to the custom nav?

I know, I should really be using the module Navigation menu, but there are two other main sections which are linked to elsewhere in the layout, and I don't want to show in the main navigation. I also can't hide those because I need them in the Breadcrumbs, e.g. 'Home > News'.

I thought I better ask whether anyone has used the Custom Navigation with 'trail' before. Or whether there is the definate answer that this is not possible. Many thanks

Ok, I've solved this by using the module Navigation Menu, and hiding the other two sections within re-direct pages, and those are hidden from the navigation.
