Explain why 'from price' is zero

Can someone please explain:

why the starting price is zero €, even if there has been a price set (master product + variants).

I have had the same thing once Solved it then by writing a function for the product price calculation hook.

That function retrieves the variation with the lowest price and returns that price if the input price at that moment is zero. But I thouht this was fixed. On a later moment I got correct "from" prices.
