    Default Cookie Law

Anyone read about this recently? Supposed to be taking effect from 25th May I think.
Does using google analytics apply to this? Would anything need changing in Contao to comply?

Hi, yes, this law also applies to Google Analytics as far as I am aware as Google Analytics involves the use of a number of cookies. The data is used by Google and to conform with the EU regulations a website that serves a page to a EU based visitor must ask for user permission before storing a cookie on the users PC.

I see that contao uses a cookie named PHPSESSID. Is this cookie required and necessary for normal site functionality?

For the time being I can remove the Google Analytics add-on from my Contao installation but the PHPSESSID cookie may be a potential issue.

Is it possible to disable the PHPSESSID cookie?

We are looking into this for our clients and will be offering them a solution to let users accept the cookies used on their websites.

Websites in the UK just have to make users aware that the site does store cookies on the users computer.

We are going show a drop down that say's somehthing along the lines of:

"We would like to place cookies on your computer to help us make this website better. To find out more about the cookies, see our privacy notice (link).
I accept cookies from this site. Continue."

We are also going to write a module and share it with the community for this.

you can use a Chrome plugin to track cookies and then use this sevice to generate a Cookie policy:

IMO the PHPSESSID-Cookie is exempt from this regulation as it is needed technically (esp. for forms).

The last time I read it, the legislation said that you require consent of the users for placing tracking code (we call cookies cookies) that is not vital for the correct functioning of your website. That would mean you don't have to ask for permission for any cookie from and only used upon your website because they are vital to remembering user settings or shopping baskets and so on.

The legislation is meant to do something about the tracking cookies used to track you between websites. Google and Zalando are two companies I can think of that do that. (Click on any Zalanado product and it starts appearing in Zalando ads).

So as far as the EU guideline goes you most likely are fine not asking, but more strict rules might apply per country.

Actually there are 3 videos related to the topic. Enjoy, it's funny and sad at the same time.

We have this stupid law here in Spain, the best thing to do is to use a plugin that warns every user about the cookies when he access the site
