MetaModels in the Extension Repository

Will the MetaModels module ever be available in the Extension Repository?

I am hoping to see a beta soon as I've tested the alpha and it seems pretty stable to do the basics with. I have seen threads in the German forum about how you can install the alpha nightlies using composer but for now would prefere to use the ER.

Does anyone have any information on this or can clarify what the plans are with MM and the ER?

Short answer: No!

MetaModels will be available only via Composer dependency manager.

Do you know if composer be the system Contao will use to manage extensions in the future?

Or will it just be an option for people to use if they want as well as the ER?

Yes, it is planned for the near future. As soon as it is running on a broader base of shared hosting providers the Composer module will replace entirely the current ER2.
